Signs Your Website Needs a Revamp: Lessons from the Field

You have invested heavily in your equipment, hired skilled teams, and built a reputation in your field. But here’s the truth many construction, engineering, and mining companies don’t want to face: Your website might be quietly costing you leads and contracts.

In today’s competitive market, your website isn’t just “something you have to have”  it’s often the first impression a potential client gets of your business. And if it’s out of date, slow, hard to use, or invisible on Google, you’re giving your competitors an easy win.

The Big Contract You Never Knew You Lost

Earlier this year, I spoke to the managing director of a medium-sized civil engineering firm in Gauteng. They had just lost out on a multi-million rand infrastructure contract for a mining project.

When they asked the procurement officer why, they got a short but painful answer: “We couldn’t find enough recent, detailed information about your past projects online. The other company’s website made it easier to trust them.”

It was all too familiar to me because few years earlier, I also lost out on an international Brand & Marketing deal for the very same reason, it was a multi national engineering company based in Dubai, after months and series of calls and video meeting the deal fell through, I was so sure the team got it, but we did not.

Here’s the kicker we didn’t lose because of price, capability, or track record. We lost because of our digital presence didn’t inspire confidence.

In industries like construction, engineering, and mining, where clients make big, high-risk purchasing decisions, trust and credibility matter as much as technical expertise. Your website should act like a sales representative that works 24/7. If it’s not doing that, here are the 7 clear warning signs you need a revamp.

The 7 Clear Signs Your Website Needs a Revamp

1. Your Website Looks Like It’s from Another Decade

First impressions happen in seconds. If your site design hasn’t changed since 2017 or worse, since the early 2000s  you’re sending the wrong message.

What outdated looks like:
  1. Tiny, low-quality images that don’t do justice to your work.
  2. Cluttered layouts with too many menus and no clear flow.
  3. Fonts and colours that scream “old school” instead of “industry leader.”

For example, I once reviewed the site of a successful construction company in Mpumalanga. Despite their excellent portfolio, their site used small, grainy photos and had no mobile version. The first impression? That the company was behind the times.

And in technical industries, looking behind the times digitally can make you look behind the times technically even if that’s far from the truth.

2. Your Site Takes Forever to Load

Patience is short in business and even shorter online.

Research shows that if your site takes longer than 3 seconds to load, you could lose up to 40% of your visitors instantly. This isn’t just about impatience in your industry; project managers, engineers, or procurement teams are often working to tight schedules. They won’t wait for a slow site to load when they can click on a competitor’s link instead.

A mining services provider that we recently audited had a visually appealing homepage, but it was hindered by excessive uncompressed images and outdated scripts, resulting in a 12-second load time. Their bounce rate? Over 80%.

A slow site isn’t just frustrating it tells prospects you might be slow in other areas too.

3. You’re Invisible on Google

It doesn’t matter how great your company is if people can’t find you when they search.
Try this test right now: search “mining contractors in Limpopo” or “structural engineering firm Johannesburg.”

If you’re not on the first page, you’re handing business to the companies that are.

The reality is, most SMEs in the construction and engineering space rely heavily on referrals and word-of-mouth. But procurement teams often still do a Google search to shortlist suppliers and if you’re invisible, you’re out before the race even starts.

4. Prospects Can’t Find Clear Contact Details

You’d be surprised how many company websites bury their phone number three clicks deep, hide their email address, or make the only way to get in touch a clunky form.

I once audited a logistics company that had no clickable phone number and a contact form that didn’t even work. They were losing opportunities simply because people couldn’t reach them easily.

In B2B industries, convenience wins. A visible phone number, email, and quick quote request form can make all the difference between a warm lead and a lost one.  Prevent that by getting checking your site performance today.

5. No Clear Showcase of Past Projects

In construction, engineering, and mining, credibility is built on proof of past work. Simple question would you allow a company that does not have any proof of work or no clear identifiable past builds to construct your dream house?  If your project gallery hasn’t been updated since 2018, you’re not showing potential clients what you’re capable of today.

Case studies, high-quality photos, and short write-ups of completed projects do more than show what you’ve done they help clients imagine you doing the same for them. For example, a steel fabrication firm in the Northern Cape doubled their tender shortlist rate simply by adding updated project showcases to their site.

6. Your Website Isn’t Mobile-Friendly

Many decision-makers review websites on the go in airports, on-site, or between meetings. If your site forces them to pinch and zoom, scroll endlessly, or fight through menus that don’t work on mobile, they’ll just move on.

One safety consultancy I worked with saw a 45% increase in leads after we made their site mobile-first. They didn’t change their offering they just made it easier for prospects to browse and enquire from their phones.

7. No Clear Call to Action (CTA)

Even if your site gets traffic, if you’re not telling visitors exactly what to do next, you’re losing them.”

A CTA could be:
  • “Request a Quote”
  • “Book a Consultation”
  • “Download Our Capability Statement”

A mechanical engineering firm I audited had a beautiful site but nowhere to actually request a quote. Visitors had to dig through multiple pages to find contact details. Adding a clear “Request a Quote” button to the top right corner boosted enquiries by 70% in the first month.

Your website is not just an online brochure it’s your frontline salesperson.
If it’s underperforming, it’s time to revamp before the next big opportunity passes you by.

The Hidden Cost

Every outdated image, missing project example, or slow-loading page is a silent reason for a prospect to choose someone else. In industries where contracts can be worth millions, the cost of a poor website isn’t just lost leads it’s lost opportunities you’ll never even know existed.
